Why Black Girls Are Being Pushed Out of Sport
Women in Sport
We worked with Black girls aged 13–23 across the UK to understand why, despite loving sport, so many feel shut out of it.
Through expert roundtables, five days of digital self‑ethnography and in‑depth group conversations, we explored how racism, stereotypes, hair rules and media narratives shape their confidence and access.
Their stories revealed that the issue isn’t a lack of interest - it’s systems and environments that fail to adapt to their needs and identities.
We transformed these insights into clear opportunities for change, helping Women in Sport spotlight where sport must evolve to truly include Black girls.
Impact:
A powerful evidence base revealing how sport excludes Black girls - and a roadmap to help the sector build spaces where they can feel safe, confident and fully welcome, with a sharing programme including sector workshops, a podcast and other output.
