Cooking our own Christmas dinner with Migrateful

For this year’s Christmas party, the Humankind Research team made its way to the Migrateful cookery school in Farringdon. Migrateful was founded in 2017, with the aim to support and celebrate migrants on their journey to employment and integration. Migrateful provides the necessary training to migrant chefs from around the world to run their own cookery classes in which they teach their traditional cuisines to the public.

We were welcomed by an enthusiastic and warm team of volunteers and were lucky enough to learn from Chef Najee about Afghan cooking. We spent time chopping, frying, steaming, dumpling shaping and couldn’t believe the amount of food we were able to put together. Some of the highlights were Kormah Bamieh (an okra and tomato stew), Barenj borah Beryan (Afghan rice with burnt sugar) and Mantu and Ashak (meat and leek dumplings).  A beautiful opportunity to spend time together as colleagues, learn from others and sit together for a meal and some Secret Santa gifts.

Some high praise from the team:

“I’m so glad to have experienced this amazing initiative! Food as a way to immerse in different cultures is my favourite thing, nice to get hands on with it and it was the best meal I’ve had all year – will be doing it again for sure”

We are all looking forward to making our way back to the Migrateful kitchens, to support an important cause and discover more delicious foods from around the world!
